An equity mutual fund pools investors' money into a portfolio that primarily holds company shares. You own units of the scheme, whose value changes with the portfolio after expenses. Professional management does not make the value predictable or protect your capital from loss.
What are the main types of equity fund strategies?
Large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap labels describe exposure to companies of different sizes. A fund focused on smaller companies can behave differently from one holding larger businesses, particularly when markets are stressed. Read the scheme's current mandate rather than inferring its full portfolio from its name.
Other strategies spread investments across company sizes or focus on a particular sector or theme. Sector and thematic funds can concentrate exposure to a narrow part of the economy. Buying several funds focused on the same theme may add more overlap than diversification.
Active funds and index funds
An active fund uses a manager's investment decisions within its mandate. An index fund seeks to track a stated index. For a passive strategy, check which index it follows, its costs and the gap between the fund's return and the index return. An index of a single sector can still be concentrated.
Neither approach removes market risk. The useful comparison is the role, portfolio and cost of the specific schemes, not a blanket claim that one approach always wins.
What risks should a beginner understand?
- Market risk: share prices can fall across the market.
- Concentration: a few companies or sectors can dominate results.
- Strategy risk: a manager's approach can underperform for extended periods.
- Timing of withdrawals: a fall close to your goal can leave less money available when needed.
A longer horizon gives more time to experience different market conditions; it does not guarantee a positive outcome. Think about both your willingness to see losses and your financial ability to wait.
A checklist before investing
Read the latest scheme documents, factsheet and Riskometer. Check the benchmark, holdings, expense ratio, exit load and any access restrictions. Make sure you compare the same plan and option when reviewing performance.

Does an SIP change an equity fund's risk?
An SIP spreads your purchases across dates. It does not change what the fund owns or guarantee recovery after a fall. Choose the investment first for its intended role, then decide how and when to contribute.
Frequently asked questions
Are equity mutual funds safe for short-term goals?
Equity values can fall significantly before a near-term payment is due. Assess the withdrawal date and consequences of a loss rather than assuming a fund will recover in time.
Is an index fund risk-free?
No. An index fund follows its underlying market exposure, which can lose value. The index composition and concentration matter as well as the cost.
