Direct vs Regular Mutual Funds: Costs, Support and Key Differences

Understand Direct and Regular mutual fund plans: the same scheme portfolio, different costs and distribution routes, plus questions to ask before investing.

Two routes to the same investment building, one with a guide, illustrating Direct and Regular Plans.

Direct and Regular are two plans of a mutual fund scheme. They share the scheme's portfolio and fund manager, but their expense ratios differ. This is a choice about distribution and cost, separate from the asset class or the decision to invest through an SIP.

Why do the costs differ?

A Regular Plan includes distribution-related costs and commissions in its expense ratio. A Direct Plan does not involve distributor commission and has a lower expense ratio than the corresponding Regular Plan. Different expenses lead to separate NAVs and different net returns.

Read the current expense ratio for the exact scheme and plan. Do not assume a fixed cost gap applies to every fund or that every online channel offers Direct Plans.

An illustration of a cost difference

For illustration only, a 0.5 percentage-point annual expense difference on a constant ₹1,00,000 balance corresponds to roughly ₹500 over one year. Actual expenses are reflected in NAV over time, the balance changes, and expense ratios can change. This simple calculation is not a quote for any scheme.

For the same portfolio before expenses, a lower expense burden leaves more of the return with the investor. That does not remove the portfolio's investment risk.

What support do you want?

Ask a distributor what assistance is available for documentation, transaction queries, statements and servicing. Do not infer a particular service level from the word “Regular.” Compare the assistance actually offered with the ongoing cost difference.

For Direct investing, consider how you will research schemes, complete transactions and handle records. Where independent personalised investment advice is needed, check the provider's appropriate registration, scope and fees separately.

How stocIQ fits

stocIQ is an AMFI-registered Mutual Fund Distributor, ARN-273135. Mutual fund distribution through stocIQ is commission-based and may be under Regular Plans. Ask for the scheme's plan details, current costs and applicable disclosures before proceeding.

You can contact the team for product information, paperwork and servicing support. This educational guide is not a claim that one plan is suitable for every investor.

Check consequences before switching

Do not assume that moving an existing holding between plans is merely changing a label. Check the AMC's process and whether redemption, reinvestment, exit load or tax consequences apply. Obtain current information for your scheme and circumstances before submitting an instruction.

Before confirming a transaction

  • Read the complete scheme name, plan and option.
  • Check the current expense ratio and exit conditions.
  • Understand how the intermediary is compensated.
  • Confirm the support and responsibilities on each side.
  • Keep the application and transaction confirmations.

Our first-investment checklist covers the remaining preparation steps.

Frequently asked questions

Does Regular mean a monthly SIP?

No. Regular describes the distribution plan. SIP describes periodic contributions. An eligible scheme may offer SIP contributions under either Direct or Regular Plans.

Is a Direct Plan less risky than its Regular Plan?

The plans share the same underlying scheme portfolio. The cost difference does not make the underlying investment exposure safer.
